Lets make the right noises and gun for the right records!!
Writers are going to become a prized lot.For writing is soon going to gain immense popularity;since after we go deaf, as most of us dont know or understand sign language,we will have to write to communicate.I dont have to be Sanjay B Jumaani(I better have got the spelling right for doesnt his career seem to have been penned by it;-p) or a prophet to predict this.Apparently noise levels in Mumbai are higher than the standard noise limits that our Mumbaikar eardrums can bear.Even if you make considerations;you see living in Mumbai has seen our ears being privy to a lot of things in excess - gossip, riots, bomb blasts, politicians speeches(yamn!!) and what have you!;maybe we have more tolerance than the average metro or megapolis dweller. But the limit is around 85 decibels while we seem to stand tall(or hear tall in this case) in the 200s!!
But no one seems to care enough or hear enough! So like conductors in a private symphony we seem to be blaring our musical compositions AKA honking across Mumbai's locations.Places like Carter road in Bandra or Reclamation are virtual sound-war zones. As if our car engine noises were not enough,we seem to want to announce our narsissistic presence by honking.Yes monsieurs, presence acknowledged- And How!!!OR does it stem from our desire to create records; that too at any cost!Record for the best megapolis;for the best hangouts and eateries;for the most wealthiest people and coming soon record for being the 'First City of the Deaf'.
Few months back the Courts had declared a few 'Silence Zones'(ya right what a laugh!).These are designated areas like schools and colleges wherein the noise is not supposed to exceed certain permissible limits. These limits are not only during festivals;which is the only time this noise pollution issue takes centrestage, but is also to be followed on normal days. But the road parallel to Lilavati hospital which is a Silence zone by the way, also holds the distinction of being one of the noisiest! Boon in disguise for hospitals;for patients will have to get additionally treated for hearloss symptoms!Add to this the new age romeos and Dhoom fans who zip on their bikes without silencers thinking their revving their engines loudly is going to get them vrooming into girls hearts!!Love is blind dahlin, not deaf!!!
Peace and Quiet you want; ofcourse you will have it very soon!Go deaf and then its only peace and quiet for you my friend!Even as I sit and write this blog in a tiny cyber cafe in first cross lane in Lokhandwala, my extremely tiny and sensitive ear drums are being exposed to a hindi song blaring from the speakers coupled with irritating chatter and loud traffic noise outside! We realy could put A R Rehman to shame, such composition I tell you!
So lets for once make the right noises for the right things!Give you hands a little less exercise and lift it off the horns.Get those bikes( and even the brains) examined.Incase you dint know, reverse horns are illegal,so please find some other way to showcase to people your sad choice of music. We all do a little bit and maybe just maybe, we will be able to better appreciate the different sounds of nature like birds twittering or better still hear the voice of our own conscience!
