Run Mumbai Run

Run Mumbai Run

For some people it is the culmination of a fantasy. For some it is the beginning. Running the Marathon was never my dream. So wearing sneakers for the Dream Run (the only realistic run/walk/stroll for us non athletes) never really caught on with me. But I saw my friends go gaga over the event. Those who complain about having to climb stairs to the first floor or those who hop into cabs or auto rickshaws even if the distance costs less than minimum fare wanted to run. What is it I wondered? Is it the ‘been there, done that’ feeling? Is it the ‘being seen there, who cares if I run’ idea? Is it the ‘Spirit of Mumbai’ bug? Or is it the clear indication of how empty our urban community living has been so far. Mumbai is an old enough city, for natives and migrants. But there is nothing that brings all of us together on one platform (except the train platforms off course). Bandra fair is for believers (especially those who believe in wax wishes).

South Mumbai cultural festivals are for Sobos (different from the rest of mortal mumbaikars). Intra-city sports events find fans only among friends and family of players. The one thread that binds all was missing until the marathon caught our imagination. And it literally bound runners like train rakes. The celebrity brigade did its bit of pulling crowds. The crowd dutifully tagged along. And so was formed the amazing human chain, the Mumbai Marathon. What I truly love about it is the fact that it is a great equalizer. Sobos and suburbanites, famous and almost famous, all take the road that has no VIP lane. The idea is simple- have feet, will run. Now that is why it is called the Dream Run.
