From Jessica To Ruchika

Campaigns for justice seem to have become media dependent. The system too seems to wait for a media wake up call to act. Between Jessica and Ruchika there must have been hundreds of girls who were wronged. So many ordinary people suffer because they are just that. ‘Ordinary’. Investigations become set ups, courts cases go on like soap operas, forever in ‘to be continued…’ mode. People who have faith in the system live entire lives fighting for what they believe in. Some go to the media to pump a shot of strength into their weak status. But media can only give temporary attention. If that much serves its purpose, fine. Otherwise the ball moves back and forth only to return to the dribbling stick of the high and mighty. Point is, campaigns need to get out of media madness. They have to be strong on matter, not just masala. Because as soon as the masala fades, media will drop it from the menu. Not entirely their fault. Public interest apart, media also have to consider what the public are interested in.

It is high time the legal fraternity of our country decided what their mission statement should be. The bar and the bench together have to reframe their mandates. Upholding the law, in letter and spirit should be its one and only purpose. The earlier they realize this, the better it will be for their own sake. Because as justice becomes a joke, fewer people will turn to courts for remedy. Justice will become retribution, on the spot, bypassing the authorities and the law. That will be the ultimate nail in the coffin, for the system and its so called keepers. No amount of influence, money or power can save offenders from this kind of justice. The law of the jungle will show animals like SPS Rathore their right place. Then, God save them, and us.
