And the award goes to…

The first month of the year is an exciting time for us filmy types. We believe in awards. All of them. Never mind that there are probably more awards than the number of worthy nominations per category. Had it been a school, everyone would have gone home with a trophy. Unlike the Academy Awards, there isn’t one ultimate recognition for a Bollywood star or film. Call it the democratization of appreciation but the number of awards just makes it more fun for fans to bet on their favorites. National awards are definitely coveted, but since they are only announced, not ‘showed’ we lay public don’t wait for them. More ceremonies mean more star studded performances (although I feel the overwork shows in the shows). Then there is the typical camerawork and clever switching and editing that builds a story out of plain applause. So Rekha’s performance will definitely catch Amitabh Bachchan and family in jaw dropping moments. Saif and Shahid will be shown back to back as Kareena sizzles on stage. Shahrukh will be seen smirking as the Bachchans take centre stage.

People just love to imagine what stars might be saying into each other’s ears as they sit through the show. Also of great interest is who sits next to who, apart from who wears what. My personal reason for sitting through the entire telecast (which is made long and painful by the ads) is the ‘thank you speeches’. They are getting wittier, naughtier and really candid year after year. Who cares about rumors of rigging? Don’t you get it. It isn’t about the lovely black or gold ladies at all. It isn’t about films either. It is about stars in the drawing room, as themselves.
