Art Attack
The rough and unclean street walls of Parel had an Art Attack with color & music yesterday.
Though this humble project started out with a few enthusiastic people, its growing to be much bigger than anticipated. Mumbaikars are doing everything to make their city heaven. This project is an innovative and a colorful idea of keeping Mumbai clean.
It's an initiative to add visual elements of color and texture to a space, in order to make the area more lively. With time, the Wall Project has become a creative event and along with the Municipal Corporation of Mumbai, the second painting session was commenced on the Tulsi Pipe Road (stretching from Mahim to Lower Parel that runs along the Western Railway line in Mumbai). Open to the entire artist clan and people who love the city & wish to make it look colorful. From kids to parents, everyone had come to spray and sprinkle colors of joy and spread messages of peace.
When you think of Mumbai, few things strike you instantly, like cutting chai, local trains, bhopu’s (megaphone) and rickshaws. An eye catching painting displaying all of this looked splendid. Another attraction was a mural which stood out from the rest as it was made out of yellow spiders.
It was nice to see Mumbaikars utilizing their Sunday by painting these walls and making the city look clean. "Even I had so many assignments to do but I too chose to paint the walls. I hope this becomes a trend in Mumbai and all the street walls are painted so that people around don’t litter, pee or spit" said Hetal Shukla. His installation was naturally done with creepers being painted and a simple message saying 'I love nature'. Hetal proudly exclaimed “when people pass by I want them to read it".
"I haven’t come with any thought or idea, I am just going to paint what comes to my brush & mind when I dip it in the color box. If you love Mumbai it won’t take time to depict it through your paintings" said Vaibhav.
“I have been living in Mumbai for 32 years and every Sunday I either sit here or pass by without a smile. Looking at these walls today, I have never felt so happy. Bahut accha lagta hai abhi idhar drive karke jaane ko” added a happy Taxi driver.
The charm of the project was such that even bikers, drivers and travelers stopped to watch the wall of fame. If that wasn't enough, they were lured to pick up a brush and paint. A time came when the walls seemed inadequate. These walls have a lot to offer to the city and its denizens. From tourist attraction to stress buster, colorful walls can do a lot. Most importantly they can bring in a lot of positivity.
It seems the BMC employees also got a little creative by spray painting the bikes and rear ends of the tempos in which they carried paints, brushes etc. Though painting in the sun can get extremely tiring but when the spirits are high nothing seems impossible.
