Ishqiya - "thoda kachcha hai jee..."

Albeit aesthetically-made, "Ishqiya" left me wanting for more!

Ishqiya - "thoda kachcha hai jee..."

First and foremost, if you are expecting to see a highly entertaining, comic movie as projected by its brilliantly-designed promos, then you are sure going to be disappointed to a great extent. All such scenes are scattered through the film and so fail to generate a collective entertaining impact.

Ishqiya revolves around the story of two con-men, Khalujaan (Nasseruddin Shah) & Babban (Arshad Warsi) who are running to save their lives from their boss and find shelter in the house of a young and attractive widow, Krishna (Vidya Balan). During their extended stay, Krishna starts flirting with both of them, as she has a hidden agenda to get a task done by the two.

 Pros

  1. Ishqiya has a very interesting, twisted story plot that's told in an amusing manner. Director Abhishek Chaubey does extremely well for his début.
  2. The wonderful duo of Vishal Bhardwaj & Gulzar creates magic once again with four gems, Ibn-E-Batuta, Badi Dheere Jali, Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Jee & Ab Mujhe Koi.
  3. The best part of the movie remains its performances, with all actors keeping their parts realistic and with just the right style and look. Naseeruddin Shah is the best of the trio and gives a great performance as a lonely one-sided lover. Arshad Warsi is funny yet wicked with his abusive language and bindaas style, and so is Vidya Balan in her sultry, liberated widow avatar.
  4. The intimate scenes are aesthetically shot and thus do not make the viewer squirm in his seat!

Cons

  1. The main drawback in the movie is that its starts too slow and picks up too late. The film shows everything in store for the viewer only post intermission and that too in such a hurried pace which further leads to many confusions. The love triangle plot in the script, left with an open end in the last scene, which may not appeal to all.
  2. The movie was promoted as one with vulgar language when there are hardly any such dialogues.
  3. Despite all its plus points, there's the X-factor that seems missing after the film is over and done with. The screenplay lacks clarity and thus the climax becomes a little chaotic.

Verdict

Ishqiya
is a very well-devised slow paced and dark thriller. From a film student's point of view, Ishqiya is not perfect but still great work. But from a common man's viewpoint looking for entertainment, the movie leaves him unattended. Unfortunately, it loses it way somewhere between producer Vishal Bhardwaj & director Abhishek Chaubey’s cinematic sensibilities. Surely a one-time watch for the crackling performances & possibly the best OST of 2010 so far!
