In commemoration of the International Day of the Disabled 2009, ABLE DISABLED ALL PEOPLE TOGETHER, ADAPT organized a solidarity rally from Kalaghoda to Mantralaya. Actor Abhay Deol along with Padmashri Dr Mithu Alur flagged off the rally. Theatre actors Rajat Kapoor, Lilette Dubey released balloons and supported the cause

Beginning at Kalaghoda, the rally saw enthusiastic children, supportive parents, teachers, volunteers and curious bystanders unite for the cause of the disabled. Dr Alur led her army as they marched down the streets of South Mumbai bravely taking every bump and speed braker in their stride.

The Rally ended at the Gandhi Udyan where a small function was put together. People signed in on the community whiteboard pledging their support. Prominent artists and advocates like Dolly Thakore, Raell Padamsee, Cyrus Broacha, Shaina NC lent their voices to the cause .Nikhil Chib and Varsha Hooja opened the evening with delightful commentary followed by a short, colourful program where young kids presented the Koli dance and sang “Honge Kamyaab”
“Nothing about Us without Us” is the motto of this year’s International Day of the Disabled People. Proclaimed by the General Assembly in October 1992, this day aims to raise awareness on disabled people’s rights at national and international levels.
About ADAPT:
The Spastic Society is India is now called ADAPT, was founded by Dr. Mithu Alur in 1972. Over three decades. From a special school started with three children, it has grown to become one of the foremost non profit organizations in the country, providing services for more than 3000 children and 10,000 families. The organization operates on a unique model which is on a macro, mezzo and micro level. On the macro level it deals with legislation, policy and reformative action, on the mezzo level it operates on the ground level in the community in the urban slums, rural and tribal areas and on the micro level in networks with over 100 schools bringing about change in the classrooms.
About Dr. Alur:
In 1998 Dr Alur completed her Ph.D. entitled, 'Invisible Children: A Study of Policy Exclusion' from London University. Dr Alur is the Principal Coordinator of the National Resource Centre for Inclusion which is an Indo Canadian Initiative. The Project partners are The Spastics Society of India (Mumbai) and the Roeher Institute (Canada). This project is researching into difficulties of inclusion and working towards a macro level change in policy for inclusion to take place with both a national and an international thrust. The overall aim of NRCI is to support India's ‘Education for All’, policy reforms within a human rights context. Dr Alur is also one of the Principal Investigators of the SSI/UNICEF Project which is examining intervention strategies for inclusive education in the inner city slums and within existing given resources.
